What Men Really Want But Don’t Talk About- Pillows

by Christine on August 13, 2010

Men's throw pillow Discussion

"Pillows? I've nothing against them... I sleep with one every night".

Two things most men don’t like talking about are feelings and pillows… throw pillows… you know the decorative ones.

I own a professional drapery workroom and a good part of my day is about designing, fabricating and selling custom pillows and throws.  Market  research is really important for me but my brand hasn’t grown enough  (yet) to do a Harris Poll Consumer Survey.

When I asked my husband’s best friend, an agricultural engineer, what he knew about  pillows he answered, “I don’t have anything against them, I sleep with one every night”.

It was a short conversation.  Maybe my question was too long?  Or, maybe I just came at a bad time.  You can see from the picture above that Mr. T is wearing his “one-sleeve-overalls”.  I think the significance of his bare arm is that he is either pulling a calf out of a cow or trying to get one in (via artificial insemination). Yuk.

I carefully crafted 4 throw pillow questions  and emailed them to some very high profile interior designers, SEO and tech bloggers… all men.   I’m looking for some real MAN ANSWERS.  Paul Anater, an interior designer, writer and the force behind  KitchenandResidentialDesign helped me canvass some of his lead design associates.

My Blackberry  shivered with exciting responses all morning. I am extracting  really valuable and interesting information which I have promised total confidentiality unless express permission  is given to quote the writer.

So… for those of you who are reading this, male or female, I would be ever so grateful  if you could pretty please help me out here with these four questions. Answer them in the comments publicly or … privately in an email to pillowthrowdecor@gmail.com  Results from this survey will be published next week and I think you may  find the information very helpful for your own business.  Subscribe as a reader to my blog right away (upper right column)and I will behappy to share it with you.

Thank you in advance for your help with these 4 questions that follow here.  I will pray to the fabric Gods that you be richly rewarded or that you might at least win this pillow giveaway

1)  How many throw pillows are in your living room?

2)  Do you use them to rest your head or feet or avoid them altogether?

3)  If you were forced to buy a throw pillow today would you pick light or dark? A favorite color? Or pick a color that matches something in a room?

4)  If you have a favorite pillow can you describe it for me? size, shape, color, usefulness?

I have two black and white houndstooth pillows on my black leather couch. My two dachshunds rest on them much to my frustration. :) I am a pillowaholic so really no forcing is necessary…..any color, size, shape works for me….but it does need to bring some benefit to the room. My favorite pillows are down filled and in a fabric that has texture or sheen to it. ….Usefulness is not a priority….beauty is.

Christine – I happily participated in your survey today at the behest of Paul. Thanks for keeping the questions simple and direct so they did not confuse my sorry man-brain! I look forward to reading about your interpretation of the “survey” results.

    Hi Christine,
Glad to be a member of your “male” focus group. Here are my answers to your questions.

Q1. TWO pillows in the living room, SIX in the bedroom, THREE in the guest room.
    Q2. Decorative only…occasionally a prop for reading.
Q3. Color/pattern that works with decor. Likely medium/darker colors. Maybe a color statement!
Q4. 15″-18″ square, accent colors and/or pattern, minimum use, more decorative. Probably deeper color than the furniture it sits on.

    Christine,

I happily took part in your initial survey (although I used my real name with some trepidation … er, well, too late now!) I am actually looking at the throw pillows that my wife bought but that I, as the resident architect and taste-expert, approved. What I notice looking at them now is that they are all very stout and un-karate-chopable – I know you will understand this comment.

I am anti-karate chop – I felt that I needed to clarify that for you.

Best of luck, looking forward to the results,
    Yours truly, Ernesto Vertigo

    Ok, here’s my answers:

    1) Three

    2) Mostly, I pick them up off the floor because the children used them there, or threw them there but didn’t put them back! LOL. (Acutally, I will use them occasionally to rest my arm on, or sometimes to lay on, but mostly they are there…because you are SUPPOSED to have throw pillows)

    3) I pick pillows that match the room.

    4) My favorite ones are the perfect density….not too soft, not too hard. I’m like Goldilocks, they have to be just right! LOL!

You’re funny… Goldilocks. Thanks ever so much for the info! Remember to stop by the Giveaway page and sign in for a chance to win a pillow… yes I know you sew! How about if you win I’ll just send some fabric :) :) :)

Yes I understand… “I am anti-karate chop – I felt that I should clarify that for you. ” I agree with you as it seems chopped pillows can look quite evil with long horns and a low forehead. I obviously spend a lot of time with pillows so they have to look nice and friendly otherwise they get tossed over the sundeck.

Excellent information! It is so exciting to have such intimate conversations about pillows with men!!! I’m just busting with new ideas! Cheers Christine

Christine — I am happy to help in any way I can and maybe you can farm your findings out to others who are looking for MAN ANSWERS <– Brilliant. Here’s to your continued success and thanks to Paul for thinking to include me. jb

    1) Zero
    2) If I had a throw pillow, I would use it for my head.
    3) I would go with dark.
    4) I don’t have a favorite pillow.

My home is not typical in that I have a kitchen, computer room, bed room and woodworking shop. I don’t have any spaces which one might ‘hang out’ in, with couches or anything like that. I have worked hard to create an environment which is comfortable for one, thus discouraging visitors. So in this scheme, throw pillows don’t really fit. That being said, if I had a couch, I would definitely like throw pillows.
